Sixth Grade Stakeholders Meet With School Leaders

Principals Round Table Generates Inspired Ideas

Sixth Graders Meet with School Leaders

Sixth graders had the chance to sit down with Wells administrators–Principal Carlos Rodriguez, Vice Principal Alicia Manguso and Vice Principal Miguel Suarez–and special guest Superintendent Dr. Michelle Gosh--to ask questions and share concerns and ideas. The roundtable discussions happen for each grade level three times a year.

“It’s like a steering committee,” explained Vice Principal Alicia Manguso, “we get a glimpse of how students are feeling about the student climate and discuss ideas of how to improve their experience.”

The administrators and eight sixth graders sit in a circle around a Wells math classroom at school desks. They start with an icebreaker and then get to work on topics ranging from healthier snack options in the vending machines to spicing up elective choices and ideas for after-school activities such as a ski club.

Gunnar McGuire, who took the elective Old School where students learn cursive and how to tie a tie and sew, liked it so much he wanted to add more.

“Maybe we could add more of a Home Economics element with more hands-on projects,” he said.

One student, Madison Johnson, who started a popular recycling club at C.V. Starr last year had a novel idea, “We could set up recycling bins in the cafeteria. Then we can use a company to take away the recycling and use the money we make for the Washington D.C. trip in the spring.”

“That is a great idea,” said Principal Carlos Rodriguez, “I am so impressed with you all.”
